Rural South Dakota is still a time capsule, especially along the E-W rail line where water stops were made by the old wood and steam powered locomotives about every 25 miles. Small rural communities logically sprang up around those stops. Many towns grew, matured, and declined. This is an interpretation of a scene near Harrold, one of those stops, not far from Pierre. Who was Joe? What did he haul in the old Stakebed? What kind of person was he? Aren't these the questions that lurk agound these scenes, relics of a life...What do you see here as you ponder it?

When I had the pleasure of interviewing Jackson Ordean, he began by telling me he grew up barefoot and shirtless in a small art colony town on the beach..." pungent salt and seaweed smells up my nose and the natural 'music' in my ears of foamy water flowing over gravelly sand. It was all a crystal clear world without words. People spoke 'at' me in staccato sounds I didn't really understand, but I abstractly saw each facial expression and their moving mouths... I was in my own world of feelings and pictures...that was all I knew that was real and true at the time."
